Academics and Speech

Academics Overview

Camp Lee Mar: Academics & Speech

Campers attend academics 4 sessions per week. Campers in elementary through early high school work on traditional school work with an emphasis on literacy and math. The program for older campers also includes pre-vocational and work experiences. Families are encouraged to provide academic work from home or directly from their school. Our Academic Program also includes a camp letter in newsletter format home each week and the very popular weekly cooking session!

Many campers come with flashcards, worksheets, or other materials from school. Campers also work through materials that Lee Mar provides. Each camper follows a personalized plan that is created by our teachers and teaching students.

Camp Lee Mar: Academics and Speech

Overview
Unlike traditional therapy programs, Speech at camp happens all day long. Each camper attends small-group therapy sessions between 2-4 times a week. However, Speech Specialists are also counselors embedded into your camper’s daily routines. This allows for generalization of skills to natural environments-a component typically missing from school-based therapy/ESY programs.

Skills focused on throughout the summer mirror therapy targets during the school year. Your child’s IEP guides treatment planning at camp, with an important exception. Because camp is the perfect setting for socializing, sessions have a heavy focus on pragmatics (i.e. “social communication”). This might include conversation skills, reciprocal play, perspective taking and understanding/expressing our feelings in an effective manner.

Additional targets include answering “wh” questions, comprehending stories, vocabulary development and sentence expansion. For those campers in our LIFE program, an emphasis is placed on communication in the workplace and navigating tricky social situations as we age. Each session is tailored to the unique needs of each individual camper.
